Amrita Das’ debut children’s book Hope is a Girl Selling Fruit comes as the result of two years studying at the Mithila Art Institute in Madhubani, a free art school that teaches the techniques and visual vocabulary of Mithila painting, a women’s art form indigenous to the northern Indian state of Bihar that dates back to the 14th century.
