She teaches at Williams College and lives in northwestern Massachusetts. This seminar we are reading The Voyage of the Narwhal () by Andrea Barrett, who had won the National Book Award for her short story collection Ship Fever (). Also odd (though apt), Barrett begins with an excerpt from Levi-Strauss's Triste Tropiques criticizing such expeditions as vehicles by which "platitudes and commonplaces [are] miraculously transmuted into revelations.
